ENGINEERING FRATERNITY

WHAT IS THETA TAU?

The Largest and Oldest Co-ed Professional Engineering Fraternity

The purpose of Theta Tau is to develop and maintain a high standard of professional interest among its members, and to unite them in a strong bond of fraternal fellowship.

Since its founding at the University of Minnesota in 1904, over 30,000 members have been initiated over the years. With emphasis on quality and a strong fraternal bond, the Fraternity has chapters in only ABET accredited schools, and limits to seventy the number of student members in any one of its chapters across the nation.

NATIONAL HISTORY

Theta Tau was founded on October 15, 1904 by Erich J. Schrader, Elwin L. Vinal, William M. Lewis, and Isaac B. Hanks originally as the “Society of Hammer and Tongs.” The name was changed to Theta Tau in 1911 at the first national convention, although the hammer and tongs remain symbols of the organization. Since 1904, over 35,000 members have been initiated into Theta Tau from all branches of engineering, forming a strong network of students and alumni united by a strong bond of fraternal fellowship.

Following a few years of growth and involvement in the Rutgers community, the Omicron Delta chapter of Theta Tau was formally established on February 9, 2013. Since then, Theta Tau has been an active member of the Rutgers community and has hosted numerous events, volunteered countless hours, and shared unforgettable memories.

What is Rush?

Recruitment starts at the beginning of every semester through a process known as “rushing”. Rushing a fraternity is the process of getting to know more about the fraternity, its values, and the brothers through various activities. After a couple of weeks, a group of potential new members is selected to start the pledge process. Pledging is a process that challenges new members to be their best and requires your complete dedication and time commitment. Fill out the following form if you are interested in rushing!

Note that as our national policy we adhere to the GreekLifeEdu hazing and alcohol policies located here. To view our national hazing and alcohol policies, click here.
